Compression & Sublife come together once again to bring you a night of big basslines and slumping beats with some of San Francisco’s finest…

Room 1:

DJG (Wheel&Deal, Surefire)
Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dean J. Grenier A.K.A DJG landed in the world of Dubstep in 2006 with his first 12″ “Shadow Skanking” b/w “Joyful Sound” on Narco.Hz. Immediate support on Rinse FM and in the clubs from DJ’s like N-Type propelled DJG to the forefront of American dubstep producers early in his career.

DJG’s production style is richly melodic, emotive while full of groove and energy. Now considered a veteran of the American dubstep vanguard, DJG’s recent productions have revealed an evolution in his music, getting deeper into tech-drenched, tribal, soulful tracks like “Time Is The Fire” b/w “Escape Pod” on Transistor or “Pressure” b/w “Spacecakes (feat. Headhunter)” on Wheel&Deal. DJs ranging from Mary Anne Hobbs, Joe Nice, 2562, Distance, Pinch, Headhunter, Skream, N-Type, Djunya, Random Trio and many more have been supporting DJG’s recent and forthcoming releases on labels Wheel&Deal, Transistor, Pushing Red, Warm Communications amongst others.

When DJG gets behind the decks, his passion for the music he plays is obvious. His talents have brought him all over the world including a recent set at the legendary club Fabric in London. His enthusiasm for the deeper side of bass music and his affection for dance floor selections makes each set a spontaneous combination of the highs and lows that the sound has to offer.

Pawn (Smog)
Pawn (born David Sandstrom) is both a member and producing artist of Los Angeles-based dubstep collective SMOG. Currently residing in San Francisco, (the only SMOG artist living outside the City of Angels), his dynamic California-style and charismatic productions place him in a wide range of electronic music genres. Surrounded by the colorful palette of The Golden State’s endless musical influences, Sandstrom’s productions venture through layers of glitch-hop and jungle, often energized by elements of crunk and painted with the guttural auras of dubstep.

After a decade-plus relationship with the local drum-and-bass community, Sandstrom joined SMOG in 2008. Inspired by the fresh and rapidly growing bass culture of the LA underground, he quickly landed a fundamental role in pushing Los Angeles dubstep forward. He joined the crew during the height of its endeavor into the more mainstream world, and in 2009 he stepped into a broader spotlight with his remix of hip-hop legends GZA and Ras Kass, featured on “Wu-Tang Meets the Indie Culture Vol. 2: Enter the Dubstep”. Soon after, in 2010 he released the Headshot EP (SMOG) – a punchy dance track featuring E.M.U. and the vocals of Atlanta’s dub emcee, Werd2Jah.

Sandstrom features several collaborative and remixed works with artists The Glitch Mob, CC Sheffield and SMOG artists 12th Planet, E.M.U., Kelly Dean, and Steady. He is currently working on remixes for Sublife Recordings and Koldfront records. Recently featured in Big Up Magazine as one of the next “Big Up and Coming” artists, Pawn keeps the ball rolling with his first album Close the Lights released October 2011 on Smog Records.

Room 2:

Reilly Steel (Top Billin, Rocket Science – SF)
Reilly Steel is an up and coming DJ/Producer from San Francisco. With original releases forthcoming on Top Billin and Rock It Science Laboratories (with remixes by MikeQ, 5kinAndBone5, and others), remixes out on Trouble & Bass (as the winner of the T&B remix contest) and We Do It, and having shared the stage with the likes of dBridge, Ital Tek, ill-Esha, and The Captain, he is an artist to watch over the next year.

Before turning to production, Steel made a name for himself in Vermont as booking manager and resident DJ at The Bunker, throwing packed parties featuring such talent as Drop the Lime, Mikix the Cat, Junior Sanchez, the Palms Out Sounds crew, and Alexander Technique.

Reacting against a lack of musicality in some forms of dance music but still committed to keeping his sets energetic, Steel attempts to retain both nuance and rawness in his sets, playing a variety of music under the umbrella of “bass music.” Not satisfied with pidgeonholing himself into one genre, he incorporates diverse influences such as dubstep, hip hop and house into genre-bending sets as full of energy as they are forward-thinking, putting crowds into a sweaty frenzy.

DBRIDGE
(exit, club autonomic, a bunch of cuts – uk)
A veteran producer and one of the most experienced artists in drum & bass, Darren White aka dBridge is an artist whose multiple transformations and evolutions glide through a staggering list of achievements. Over the course of a long and distinguished career, he has been at the heart of some the most exciting collaborative partnerships drum & bass has ever seen from Future Forces to Bad Company and mostly recently Club Autonomic. Forging a strong bond with Instra:mental, they showcased their Autonomic sound with an award-winning Fabriclive mix CD, worldwide tour and residencies for Fabric and Rinse FM. In 2011, dBridge returns the focus to his label Exit Records with the Mosaic Vol. 1 compilation and more artist LPs as he continues to be a mentor to the new breed of producers inspired by his career. As a solo artist, dBridge remains versatile with his own productions for Exit, Reinforced, Hotflush, and more.

LYNX
(soul:r, detail, digital soundboy, creative source – uk)
Opening his new label Detail Recordings in 2010, Lynx is a man on a mission to deliver only the freshest and most innovative sounds in underound electronic music. Standout tracks including ‘Disco Dodo’ and ‘Global Enemies’ may have helped make his name across the worldwide drum & bass scene but the sheer diversity and quality of Lynx’s output across labels like Soul:r, Creative Source, Digital Soundboy and Bingo have marked him as a producer par-excellence. Recent remixes for Metalheadz, Hospital and Innerground have shown he remains ahead of the rest, with cutting-edge studio skills and the drive to explore new musical avenues. A diverse and talented DJ, his live sets are largely built on exclusive and upfront material with an eclectic feel appealing to clubbers across the spectrum. Collaborating with Sense MC for his latest release on Detail (‘For the Rebels’ released October 2010), Lynx has demonstrated once again his ability to mix vocals with musicality and straight dancefloor-appeal, keeping the standard high and staying true to his own style.

BACHELORS OF SCIENCE
(horizons, santorin, www.bachelorsofscience.com – SF)
As long-time residents of the weird and always unexpected city of San Francisco, Bachelors Of Science are renowned for mixing up and making unique blends of laid back, tripped-out, soul drenched tracks that are designed to be listened to as well as just heard on the floor. Choosing quality over quantity, they are regarded as one of the most consistently innovative and sought-after remixers and producers of the area, working with everyone from dance music legends Groove Armada and Paradox to indie darlings Home Video and Silver Swans. The Bachelors continue to defy those that try to categorize them into a genre. From the deep liquid drum n bass inspired by their hometown of London and the likes of High Contrast and LTJ Bukem to the minimal inspired Autonomic sounds of dBridge and sun-drenched 4/4 grooves inspired by fellow SF locals Dirtybird … the Bachelors have retained their quality and a large and loyal following throughout, garnering plays from Annie Mac, Basement Jaxx, LTJ Bukem, High Contrast, Loxy, Doc Scott, DJ Hype, Reid Speed, Alix Perez, Grooverider and DJ Marky.

METHOD ONE
(31 recs, levitated)
In the 18 years since he first started experimenting with sampled loops, Jason Leder aka Method One has become one of the elder statesmen of the American drum and bass scene. As a dj, he has honed his craft through hundreds of gigs stretching back to the early nineties, and can be heard every Friday on www.bassdrive.com. As a musician, he is responsible for numerous releases and remixes on labels such as 31 Records, Levitated, Secret Operations, Nu Directions, Outsider, Vampire, Absys, Covert Operations, Vibez, Red Mist, Offworld, Nexus (Good Looking), Testflight, Elektra/Warner Brothers and more.

2Cents
(wodnb, formation, sublife, compression)
Known around the globe for their thundering “dirty business,” 2 CENTS have been at the forefront of professional drum and bass for over a decade. Sponsored by the London-based World of Drum and Bass, they have rocked their hyphee Bay area bounce for crowds all over the US and Europe, have been covered in electronic music magazines such as XLR8R, and Knowledge and were the featured artists on the World of Drum and Bass 10 Year Anniversary Mix. Behind the decks, 2 CENTS (DJs Aye~n and Mal) exhibit next-levels skills learned as founding members of San Francisco’s seminal drum and bass scene. While running COMPRESSION 13 years straight in the Bay, TWO CENTS have perfected the art of building up dancefloors to a frenzied pitch and then dropping subatomic bombs on people’s moms. Their tracks have been picked up by WODNB and Sublife Recordings, Formation, and Badman among others.

Emcee Child
(bachelors of science)
Child’s diverse background encompasses many different genres of music from all over his home land of England. A true pioneer of San Francisco Bass music culture, the legendary toaster makes his first appearance in nearly a year.

The Colonel MC
(wodnb, compression)
Resident MC for the legendary Compression crew in San Fran, The Colonel has laced mixes for the World of Drum and Bass, rocked parties from LA to Eastern Europe and was the first ever person to say “dirty business.” His style is lyrical, musical, bombastical and entirely his own.

N-Judah is a halfstep drum & bass swing hybrid with a moody edge. Inspired by foggy days and cloudy nights spent in the Lower Haight and SOMA districts of San Francisco and the train line that connects them. Eerie minor chords meet techy claps fueled by a deep low end and punchy kicks. Dark atmospheres, well placed fx and faint sounds of a train rolling into a station take the listener into the world of the N-Judah.

Thought Withdrawal is a bit more on the minimal side of the spectrum with lush pads and delayed synth stabs giving a bit of a space and deepness while the kicks and snares go in and out of muffled and being more out front. Some heavy break fills and thick sub lines make this one for the heads!

“Street art doesn’t exist, there is just you and the world outside.
Do what you like in the best way and think about what you are doing.”
-Blu

Blu is a street artist/animator who despite obstacles in his journey has become an internationally recognized artist who is at the top of his game.

His trademark animated wall-painting got his last video over a million views on YouTube aned his murals have appeared throughout the world. He probably doesn’t give a damn about his fame or fortune. He differs from those who prefer to exhibit their persononality rather than their work and ideas. In fact, the local newspapers nor the police have not yet managed to lay hands on him. It also seems like he has officially been dubbed an enemy and agitator by city officials in Bologna in Italy, where he lives.

Blu in Italy

“On one side there is good quality and many original ideas, on the other side “street art” is a fashion product so most of the people are just doing it because it’s “cool”. Hope this “street art” game will end soon.”

Blu in Colombia

He began his artistic career, without a specific project, following his passion for drawing and street art.
He started doing graffiti 10 years ago, working almost completely illegally, going out during the night or painting abandoned buildings. There are also many “squats” in Italy where you can be free and paint what you want.
Then in the last few years more and more legal permission and commissions were coming, so Blu started working in a more “official” way.

Blu in Poland

His work developed in two stages and two “spaces” different. The initial sketches pinned on the sketch-book are the skeleton of the second part of his work: the mural. He basically uses just black and white water based paint, a roller and some brushes. He draws using a long pole with a brush on the top. If the wall is really big he uses a scaffold or maybe a mechanical platform.

Blue in Berlin 1

The creative inspiration comes from a need to transform ordinary decaying places or revalue urban degradation with pictures that usually carry a political or moral statement.

Blue in Berlin 2
