Featuring performances by…

Bachelors of Science (Horizons, Fokuz, Sublife – SF)

As long-time residents of the weird and always unexpected city of San Francisco, Bachelors Of Science are renowned for mixing up and making unique blends of laid back, tripped-out, soul drenched tracks that are designed to be listened to as well as just heard on the floor. Choosing quality over quantity, they are regarded as one of the most consistently innovative and sought-after remixers and producers of the area, working with everyone from dance music legends Groove Armada and Paradox to indie darlings Home Video and Silver Swans.
With their own productions, the Bachelors continue to defy those that try to categorize them into a genre. From the deep liquid drum n bass inspired by their hometown of London and the likes of High Contrast and LTJ Bukem to the minimal inspired Autonomic sounds of dBridge, to the high-octane future sounds of dnb and tech’d out 4/4 grooves inspired by fellow SF locals Dirtybird … the Bachelors have retained their quality and a large and loyal following throughout, garnering plays from Annie Mac, Basement Jaxx, LTJ Bukem, High Contrast, Loxy, Doc Scott, DJ Hype, Reid Speed, Alix Perez, Grooverider and DJ Marky to name but a few.

On stage, the tales of the “full Bachelors Of Science set” are the stuff of legend. Having performed alongside acts as diverse as Pendulum, LTJ Bukem, High Contrast, Kode9, Photek, Netsky, Donald Glaude and even Elvis Costello, the guys take a crowd on a journey with everything from BoS originals and bootlegs to custom edits of cutting edge tracks and past future classics … making d&b guys admit they’ve got a soft spot for 4/4, and house lovin girls admit they miss drum n bass.

http://bachelorsofscience.com/

Kelly Dean (Smog, Sublife – LA)

Kelly Dean is a Los Angeles-based electronic musician and DJ recognized by his productions in both dubstep and drum and bass, as well as his dance floor style remixes.

Kelly Dean first gained exposure in 2008 with his drum and bass release Wait Up / Close Call (Rubik Records) with Calculon and Andy Sim. Following up with a stream of nine releases thereafter (eight influenced by dubstep), Kelly caught the attention of SMOG’s founder and landed a spot on their roster as resident artist and crew. In 2010, he collaborated with fellow SMOG talents Kemst and Steady on their first track Teflon, drafting booming chart positions along with its remixed version by prominent Canadian dubstep artists Excision & Datsik. Teflon received international support and airplay by 12th Planet, Plastician, BBC 1xtra and BBC Radio1. The release was also picked up by the Scion A/V label, which they featured on their Scion CD Sampler V.30 later that year.

Kelly Dean has worked with artists like Depone, Juakali, Phrenik, and Steady, and remixed works by Actraiser, NumberNin6 and The Widdler. His tunes have been remixed by heavy hitters Excision and Datsik, Von D, and a Australia’s Chewie.

http://soundcloud.com/kellydean

Kemst (SMOG, Respect, Sublife – LA)

Kemst is the tireless MC and resident poet of SMOG & Club Respect whose unwavering chants and rhymes keep the energy flow on fire and inspire the crowd to move, not only on the dance floor, but forward in the pursuit of their dreams. Also a DJ and bass player, this lyrical stylist says what needs to be said, rattling off uplifting and motivating shouts that bounce from the top of his head, his voice a clean knife-slice to the dark and dirty layers bass. Not content to merely perform his art, Kemst provides an integral connection between the DJs and the crowd, fusing the party together into one blast of creative expression. His cries to “believe in yourself” are a refreshing revision from the standard MC shouts, and his role is not only to engage the dance floor, but to remind them that indeed we are all part of the international electronic music community.

http://www.facebook.com/mr.kemst

Pawn (Smog, Sublife – SF/LA)

Pawn (born David Sandstrom) is both a member and producing artist of Los Angeles-based dubstep collective SMOG. Currently residing in San Francisco, (the only SMOG artist living outside the City of Angels), his dynamic California-style and charismatic productions place him in a wide range of electronic music genres.

Surrounded by the colorful palette of The Golden State’s endless musical influences, Sandstrom’s productions venture through layers of glitch-hop, footwork and jungle, often energized by elements of hip hop and painted with the guttural auras of dubstep.

http://soundcloud.com/pawnsound

Jamal (Commercial Suicide, Sublife, Formation, Compression – SF)

San Francisco’s JAMAL, is one of the Bay Area’s notorious DnB personalities. Known around the globe for his thundering “big bass & dirty business,” JAMAL has been at the forefront of professional drum and bass for over a decade and is dance floor drum and bass at its best. Behind the decks or at the controls, JAMAL exhibits next-level skills honed as a founding member of San Francisco’s Compression,
sponsored by DJ SS’s London-based World of Drum and Bass. JAMAL has rocked his upfront, hyphie, big bad bass sound for crowds all over the United States, Europe, and other parts of the globe.

<img src="http://subliferecordings.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/webbenz.jpg" alt="http://subliferecordings.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/webbenz.jpg" width="400" height=570">

“Street Art is about the street, and people that populate the street”
-Hugh Leeman

Hugh Leeman is a self-taught artist based in San Francisco. Originally from Indiana, after high school he left for the Virgin Islands. He started traveling and spent the next three years living out of his backpack. After three years Leeman ended up in San Francisco. He originally only planned to stay for six months in order to make some money to keep on the move and travel abroad, but six years later he is still here, in the same studio in the Tenderloin, painting the people around him. Hugh’s work is focused on the overlooked and forgotten people, on the marginalized citizens of societies found all over the world. Displaying on billboards, he makes us all viewers, as his art functions as a sort of advertisement for the displaced. Instead of advertising the usual products we are used to seeing in these spaces, his work forces us to recognize the people in our society that are so often ignored. In this way commuters, consumers and the like, are forced to question what they see on the day to day. By putting his subjects into full view, his work makes us recognize that these people are often treated as invisible in our society. Hugh is really involved with the homeless community in the Tenderloin district. As part of that involvement he runs a T-Shirt Project in which he paints portraits of homeless people, prints their images on t-shirts, then donates 100% of the profits to them. Over time, he has started to see the world of street art as something that he really don’t associate with too much.

“I think of what I do, or what I see as what I’m doing, as an even lower form of street art. I think, honestly, a lot of times people see street art and associate it with a low brow art movement. But I think that what I’m doing is a campaign, a public ad campaign that advertises for the work, in and of itself, as all street art does. But what makes it an ad campaign is it is directly commodified with the not for profit I’ve set up.”

A lots of his work on the streets have QR codes on them that the passerby can scan with a smart phone and it opens up a website where you can purchase a t-shirt that directly benefits the very person who’s on the poster that you see in front of you!

“For me, if you’re gonna be doing something on the street, it makes sense to have it be relevant to why you’re putting it on the street”

Sublife brings in 2012 with it’s most diverse release to date. Dub Arrest started out with long time friends Lukeino & J.Bass writing instrumental Dub tracks while recording live guitars, bass, percussion and sound design elements eventually taking the project into the studio and bringing in Kush Arora on Drums and Dubsworth on lead guitar. All four artists contributed to final mixing and production at Kush’s studio in San Francisco where Juakali’s vocals were added.

To round out the release we reached out to some of the best in Bay Area bass music production with Aphonic delivering a stellar Halfstep Drum & Bass number, followed by Pawn‘s deliciously deep Post-step funk out. To top it off, Tommy Lexxus debut’s his Riparian moniker with a tripped out Dub Techno remix.

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Luke Argilla (akaLukeino) have been involved in music all his life. From guitar at the young age of 13, to the early vibrant underground Jungle and DnB scene in San Francisco.

As a solo artist Lukeino has released tracks on labels like Levitated, Rubik, as well as his own Sublife Recordings. His tunes have been featured on BBC 1xtra, Fuel TV and even the #1 iPhone game app Tap Tap Revenge. Around 2007 he met up with the Bachelors of Science and soon after started collaborating with them on tracks. A few years later, after many late nights, and a string of great shows, they invited Luke to be the 3rd official member of the group.

Many thanks to LUKEINO for this exclusive mix for us at Kongkrete Bass! Truly great vibes throughout this mix.”

Compression & Sublife come together once again to bring you a night of big basslines and slumping beats with some of San Francisco’s finest…

Room 1:

DJG (Wheel&Deal, Surefire)
Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dean J. Grenier A.K.A DJG landed in the world of Dubstep in 2006 with his first 12″ “Shadow Skanking” b/w “Joyful Sound” on Narco.Hz. Immediate support on Rinse FM and in the clubs from DJ’s like N-Type propelled DJG to the forefront of American dubstep producers early in his career.

DJG’s production style is richly melodic, emotive while full of groove and energy. Now considered a veteran of the American dubstep vanguard, DJG’s recent productions have revealed an evolution in his music, getting deeper into tech-drenched, tribal, soulful tracks like “Time Is The Fire” b/w “Escape Pod” on Transistor or “Pressure” b/w “Spacecakes (feat. Headhunter)” on Wheel&Deal. DJs ranging from Mary Anne Hobbs, Joe Nice, 2562, Distance, Pinch, Headhunter, Skream, N-Type, Djunya, Random Trio and many more have been supporting DJG’s recent and forthcoming releases on labels Wheel&Deal, Transistor, Pushing Red, Warm Communications amongst others.

When DJG gets behind the decks, his passion for the music he plays is obvious. His talents have brought him all over the world including a recent set at the legendary club Fabric in London. His enthusiasm for the deeper side of bass music and his affection for dance floor selections makes each set a spontaneous combination of the highs and lows that the sound has to offer.

Pawn (Smog)
Pawn (born David Sandstrom) is both a member and producing artist of Los Angeles-based dubstep collective SMOG. Currently residing in San Francisco, (the only SMOG artist living outside the City of Angels), his dynamic California-style and charismatic productions place him in a wide range of electronic music genres. Surrounded by the colorful palette of The Golden State’s endless musical influences, Sandstrom’s productions venture through layers of glitch-hop and jungle, often energized by elements of crunk and painted with the guttural auras of dubstep.

After a decade-plus relationship with the local drum-and-bass community, Sandstrom joined SMOG in 2008. Inspired by the fresh and rapidly growing bass culture of the LA underground, he quickly landed a fundamental role in pushing Los Angeles dubstep forward. He joined the crew during the height of its endeavor into the more mainstream world, and in 2009 he stepped into a broader spotlight with his remix of hip-hop legends GZA and Ras Kass, featured on “Wu-Tang Meets the Indie Culture Vol. 2: Enter the Dubstep”. Soon after, in 2010 he released the Headshot EP (SMOG) – a punchy dance track featuring E.M.U. and the vocals of Atlanta’s dub emcee, Werd2Jah.

Sandstrom features several collaborative and remixed works with artists The Glitch Mob, CC Sheffield and SMOG artists 12th Planet, E.M.U., Kelly Dean, and Steady. He is currently working on remixes for Sublife Recordings and Koldfront records. Recently featured in Big Up Magazine as one of the next “Big Up and Coming” artists, Pawn keeps the ball rolling with his first album Close the Lights released October 2011 on Smog Records.

Lukeino (Bachelors of Science, Sublife)

Room 2:

Reilly Steel (Top Billin, Rocket Science – SF)
Reilly Steel is an up and coming DJ/Producer from San Francisco. With original releases forthcoming on Top Billin and Rock It Science Laboratories (with remixes by MikeQ, 5kinAndBone5, and others), remixes out on Trouble & Bass (as the winner of the T&B remix contest) and We Do It, and having shared the stage with the likes of dBridge, Ital Tek, ill-Esha, and The Captain, he is an artist to watch over the next year.

Before turning to production, Steel made a name for himself in Vermont as booking manager and resident DJ at The Bunker, throwing packed parties featuring such talent as Drop the Lime, Mikix the Cat, Junior Sanchez, the Palms Out Sounds crew, and Alexander Technique.

Reacting against a lack of musicality in some forms of dance music but still committed to keeping his sets energetic, Steel attempts to retain both nuance and rawness in his sets, playing a variety of music under the umbrella of “bass music.” Not satisfied with pidgeonholing himself into one genre, he incorporates diverse influences such as dubstep, hip hop and house into genre-bending sets as full of energy as they are forward-thinking, putting crowds into a sweaty frenzy.
